How to Measure AI Visibility: A Repeatable Brand Tracking Framework

Measuring AI visibility is less like checking a single ranking and more like running a controlled observation program. You define a useful prompt universe, sample the same surfaces on a consistent schedule, store the answers, and compare changes in mentions, citations, competitors and framing.

Step 1: define the decisions the data should support

Start with questions such as: Are we appearing for category discovery? Are competitors mentioned more often? Which sources shape the answers? Are we absent from buyer-comparison prompts? Measurement without a decision use case produces dashboards that nobody acts on.

Step 2: create a balanced prompt set

Include category prompts, problem prompts, comparison prompts, “best for” prompts, implementation questions and branded questions. Avoid a set made entirely of prompts that already contain your brand; that can dramatically overstate practical visibility.

Step 3: establish a repeatable observation window

Run the same prompts across the same platforms and locations on a stable cadence. Store date, exact prompt, platform, brand mentioned or not, citations, competing brands and a short note about framing. Repeated observations matter because generative responses can vary.

Step 4: calculate a small metric stack

Use mention rate for presence, citation rate for source inclusion, share of voice for competitive presence, prompt coverage by topic, and a qualitative framing/sentiment field. Keep the raw prompt-level evidence so every summary metric can be audited.

Step 5: turn gaps into actions

A competitor-only prompt suggests competitive/content investigation. Repeated citations to third-party review or community sites suggest off-site authority work. A crawlability warning suggests technical remediation. Measurement is useful only when each signal has an owner and a next action.

Manual vs software

A spreadsheet is sufficient for a small baseline. Dedicated software becomes valuable when the prompt set, platform count, refresh cadence or reporting burden makes manual collection inconsistent.
