Prompt tracking is the operational backbone of AI visibility measurement. The hardest part is not running prompts—it is selecting a set that represents real buyer questions without overfitting to the phrases your team hopes will make the brand look good.
Use six prompt families
Track category discovery, problem/solution, comparison, “best for” use cases, implementation questions and branded questions. This creates a more representative view of discovery than a list made only of brand-name prompts.
Tag for analysis before you scale
Every prompt should have topic, funnel stage, audience and market tags. Those tags let you see whether visibility gains are concentrated in one area instead of incorrectly declaring that the entire brand improved.

Daily tracking is valuable for active campaigns and high-priority prompts; weekly can be enough for slower strategic reporting. More frequent sampling does not automatically create better insight if nobody reviews the changes.
Store exact wording
Prompt wording is part of the measurement. “Best CRM” and “best CRM for a 10-person SaaS sales team” can produce very different answers. Keep exact prompt strings and avoid silently rewriting the set between periods.
Know the plan limits
Semrush currently lists 25 custom tracked prompts in the standalone AI Visibility Toolkit, while Semrush One tiers offer higher limits. A team with a large taxonomy should model required prompts before selecting a plan.
