AI Share of Voice: How to Benchmark Your Brand Against Competitors
AI share of voice is a comparative measure of how often your brand appears relative to competitors across a defined set of AI prompts or responses. It is useful precisely because AI discovery is competitive: the important question is often not “Were we mentioned?” but “Who was mentioned when we were absent?”
Define the denominator first
A share-of-voice number is only meaningful when you know the prompt set, platforms, markets and refresh window behind it. Two tools can produce different percentages while both are internally consistent because they sampled different universes.
Build competitor groups by buying context
Do not automatically track only your biggest SEO competitors. Include brands buyers genuinely compare, category leaders that appear in AI answers, and emerging alternatives surfaced by the data. AI answers can reveal a competitive set that differs from organic SERPs.
Analyze losses, not just the score
The most actionable report is a list of prompts where competitors appear and you do not. Group those losses into topic gaps, proof/authority gaps, source gaps and product-positioning gaps.
Use trend lines carefully
Because model outputs change, small week-to-week movements may be noise. Look for sustained movement across multiple prompts or topic clusters, especially after a meaningful content, PR or technical change.
Connect SOV to work
Assign each gap to a possible intervention: improve a product/comparison page, earn coverage on a frequently cited third-party domain, clarify entity information, fix crawl access, or create missing evidence-rich content.
